SAP updates HANA

The firm updates HANA in-memory database and computing platform.

By Amy-Jo Crowley

SAP made updates to its HANA in-memory database and computing platform.

At SAP’s TechEd & d-code conference in Las Vegas, the company launched a set of programmes, services and policies to make it easier for customers to use the platform whether on-premise or in the cloud.

The HANA service pack 9 now includes multi-tenancy architecture, which SAP claims will make it easier to provision and manage multiple database workloads in a hybrid environment.

It also includes an integrated smart data streaming option to process and analyse big data in real time and functions for Hadoop, allowing SAP HANA to access big data workloads directly.

"It’s critical for our customers to simplify their businesses and to be able to innovate in the cloud," SAP’s VP of products and innovation technology said.

"With the latest release of SAP HANA, we’re bringing new functionalities such as multi-tenancy to our cloud in order for our customers to truly innovate and simplify their business and development processes."

Other features include ACID-compliant graph storage, engine capabilities and updated licensing terms to allow customers to "mix and match" data management product in a variety of SAP application scenarios.

Steve Lucas, president of SAP’s Platform Solutions Group, added: "For the last four years, SAP has been committed to disrupting the database market with dynamic solutions that challenge old database architectures.

"With programmes like Simpler Choice, we are making it easier than ever for our customers to focus on innovation instead of integration."

The updates come as SAP announced there are now more than 4,100 HANA customers and more than 1,450 customers for SAP’s Business Suite on Hana product. More than 1,600 startups are also using Hana to build applications, SAP added.

Meanwhile, the analytics firm signed a deal with Duke Athletics to introduce data analytics into basketball training.

"With the power of SAP HANA, Blue Devil basketball fans, alumni, players, coaches and the sports media will now have ubiquitous access to this information and become more knowledgeable and invested in this storied team and university," said SAP’s VP of sales Frank Wheeler.
