Samsung has revealed plans to launch smartphone featuring a curved display in October 2013, as the company looks to maintain its dominance in the competitive smartphone industry.
The new curved display technology would also reduce Samsung’s manufacturing costs as well as differentiate its product line from other rivals such as Apple.
Being launched after testing by few customers, the new curved displays are at an early stage in screen evolution which has potential to transform high end smartphone market.
Reuters cited Samsung’s mobile business strategic marketing head D.J. Lee as saying: "We plan to introduce a smartphone with a curved display in South Korea in October."
Curved displays would also allow mobile and wearable gadgets to rival new forms that would fundamentally transform the high-end smartphone market.
Incorporating organic light emitting diode (OLED) technology, the new screens would offer improved brightness, better refresh rate and thin body, while can also be integrated into multiple flexible materials such as plastic or metal foil.
Other smartphone makers including Nokia, Sony and LG Display are also working on manufacturing flexible OLED displays same as Samsung.
