Samsung shipped 63 million phones during Q4 2012, accounting for over 30% of all smartphones shipped during the quarter.
According to Juniper research, over 200 million smartphones were shipped in Q4, 2012, with every one in three shipments being aSamsung phone.
According to the report, though Apple shipped a record number of 47.8 million iPhones, the company’s unit shipment was lower than expected.
Galaxy S3 sales boosted Samsung’s smartphone sales which passed 40 million units alone in November 2012.
Analysts say Samsung is firmly in the lead in smartphone market and Apple will need to focus on innovation in order to retain its brand leadership.
Nokia shipped 6.6 million smartphones during the quarter but its Lumia devices have yet to make an impact in the market.
During 2012, Nokia shipped 35 million smartphone devices compared to 77 million it shipped during 2011, a decrease of over 50%.
RIM shipped 6.7 million smartphones during the quarter and over 31 million for the 2012 year. However, analysts expect the Canadian company will struggle to gain back a significant market share during 2013, as it prepares to launch BlackBerry 10.
