Samsung rolls out first Tizen-powered smartwatches

Samsung says goodbye to Android.

Samsung has launched the new Galaxy Gear 2 and Galaxy Gear 2 Neo smartwatches, the first wearable tech items powered by its own Tizen platform, moving away from the Google’s Android.

The second-generation versions of the Samsung’s smartwatch line-up, both smartwatches are claimed to offer consumers increased connectivity, customisation, and control.

Features of the new Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo include a 1.63in Super AMOLED 320×320 pixels resolution display, 1GHz dual core processor, 512MB RAM and 4GB internal storage capacity, 300mAh battery, while a 2mp camera is offered only on the Gear 2.

Samsung Electronics IT & Mobile Division CEO and president JK Shin said: "With the Samsung Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo, we have enhanced everything consumers love about the Gear to offer unparalleled smart freedom in their everyday life."

Both devices also boast enhanced software offerings including remote TV controlling, fitness features like Heart Rate sensor; Pedometer; Exercise; Standalone Modes: Running, Walking; and Companion Modes: Cycling, Hiking; a standalone music player function, in addition to remote control capability via IrLED Sensor.

The South Korean mobile maker has been jointly developing its mobile platform with Intel, as Google’s free Android software is on pace to grow, which currently power’s 80% of the global smartphone market.
