Samsung has released a range of new software tools to help developers create apps for its devices.
Its five new software development kits could help drastically increase its app ecosystem as it competes in the smartphone and tablet market with Apple and Google.
The South Korean firm announced the news in San Francisco at its inaugural developer conference, and hopes to maintain its position as the bestselling Android device by enabling developers to take advantages of its Galaxy phones’ features.
These include its S Pen stylus and its Multi Window function, which allows two apps to be run in split-screen mode.
Its first developer conference comes after Apple, Google, Microsoft and Blackberry have already held several of them.
But because it relies on the Android OS, every app purchased channels cash to Google rather than Samsung, and so the company is trying to build an ecosystem of by making devices reliant on each other.
Its recently released Galaxy Gear smartwatch, has been made compatible only with other Samsung devices, the Galaxy Note, Mega and S handsets.
It is also working with Intel on a new OS called Tizen, which would run software written in HTML 5.
Samsung recently released its financial results, with smartphone sales accounting for a 26% boost in profit.
