Samsung has filed an application with the US Patent and Trademark Office for trademark registration of its virtual reality headset.
Called Gear VR, it is expected to challenge Oculus Rift and Sony’s Project Morpheus.
Though few details have been revealed by the company, media reports suggest that Samsung is working with Oculus to develop a virtual reality headgear to work with its smartphones.
According to report Gear VR will feature OLED screens, which are similar or better than Oculus Rift.
Gear VR may have wired connection to provide better immersive experience which could be broken in a wireless lag.
Samsung’s Gear VR will be designed for Samsung devices to play Android games.
Unlike a jack to plug the phone into an Oculus Rift headset, Gear VR will have a slot within the headset and it will use phone’s camera to create augmented reality information displayed in the view field.
In March, Facebook acquired virtual reality start up Oculus VR for $2bn, expecting that in future virtual reality would transform the individuals’ web experience.
With the deal the company forayed for the first time into hardware to benefit from wearable devices craze.
