Samsung is planning to release smart phones powered by Tizen operating system by August this year.

The new smartphones will be considered high-end and powered by a Linux-based open source platform.

Tizen OS powered smartphones will help Samsung reduce its dependence on Google’s Android operating system, which is currently the leading seller of Android based smartphones.

Samsung’s mobile business executive vice president, Lee Young Hee told Bloomberg, "The Tizen phone will be out in August or September, and this will be in the high-end category."

"The device will be the best product equipped with the best specifications," Hee added.

The Tizen based smartphone model will be one of the three premium models the company is planning to release including the Galaxy S4and Galaxy Note.

Earlier this year, Samsung revealed plans to merge its Bada OS with Intel backed Tizen to move away from Google’s Android, after Google acquired Motorola Mobility.

The company released its Bada software in 2009 but devices operating on that OS have proved to be less popular.

According to ABI Research, the total number of smartphones will reach 1.4 billion by the end of this year, out of which 57% of the devices will be powered by Google’s Android operating system.
