Samsung is preparing to release a smartwatch which can be used as a standalone phone, without pairing it with a smarphone like other smartwatches.

The new smartwatch planned to be released in next few months could allow users to make and receive calls, send emails and take photos.

It will come with GPS, Bluetooth and a heart monitor, allowing users to use it as a wrist walkie-talkie, sources told Wall Street Journal.

The standalone device will have slot for sim card, but the company still to reveal its name and how it will be used to make calls.

Samsung already selling Android powered Galaxy Gear and Tizen powered Gear 2 which need to be paired with smartphones to make calls or browse internet.

The Galaxy Gear incorporates a small 1.63in Super AMOLED screen, 800MHz processor, 1.9 Megapixel BSI Sensor, Auto Focus Camera, Samsung Apps, ChatON mobile communication service, Bluetooth, 4GB Internal memory, 512MB (RAM) and Li-ion 315mAh battery.

In Gear 2, Samsung ditched Android operating system that powered Galaxy Gear in favour of Samsung’s own Tizen software.
