Samsung Electronics plans to build a new Research & Development (R&D) centre in Vietnam in a bid to cater to the whole Southeast Asia region.
The South Korean electronics company has reportedly signed a deal with Posts and Telecommunications Institute of Technology (PTIT) to boost support in the R&D talent development stream and mutual project implementation.
As per the deal, Samsung will award $1.4m worth scholarships to 60 PTIT students from the mobile phone software branch by 2016, in addition to donating a lab completely furnished with about 40 desktop computers, smart devices, and a huge projector screen, thekoreabizwire reported.
As part of the deal, the company will offer support of up to 50% of tuition fees for all non-scholarship students within the branch, in addition to offering job opportunities to a few high-performing students.
Prior to the latest deal, Samsung also collaborated with the Hanoi University of Science and Technology to offer $2.5m in research grants and scholarships.
In addition, Samsung intends to invest $1bn in Vietnam for the development of a new Samsung Display project near its Bac Ninh operational facility in the northern province.
Currently, Samsung operates mobile phone assembly facilities in northern Vietnam.
