Samsung dominates in smartphone shipment during third quarter

Galaxy S3 boosted its sales with 18 million units shipped in the third quarter

By CBR Staff Writer

Samsung has expanded its lead in smarphone market, shipping about 56.3 million smartphones during the third quarter of this year, according to a new report.

According a report by Juniper Research, the number of shipment by the South Korean firm is almost double compared to the number of smartphones shipped by its close rival Apple, which sold 26.9 million units during the period.

Samsung’s smatphone dominance was boosted by its sale of flagship device, the Galaxy S3, with estimated sales of 18 million in the third quarter.

The company bettered its Galaxy S3 sale over the previous quarter and according to the analysts Samsung leveraged its global brand strength and the popularity of the Android OS to drive sales of smartphones in all price tiers.

However, the analysts at Juniper Research expect that with the festive season coming up and with a new and refreshed product line, including the iPhone 5, Apple is expected to improve its sales in the fourth quarter.

Erstwhile leaders, RIM and Nokia continue to struggle in the market dominated by Samsung and Apple, the research revealed.

Nokia’s Windows based smartphones are yet to make a significant impact, with the Finnish company shipping just 6.3 million smart devices in the third quarter, which is 63% less compared to corresponding quarter in 2011.

According to the report, this could be due to customers waiting to buy the new Windows 8 platform which is expected to be released in fourth quarter.

RIM on the other hand shipped 7.7 million smartphones while Samsung’s Android competitors like HTC and Motorola seem to be losing steam in the smartphone war.

ZTE shipped about 20 million smartphones over the first three quarters with third quarter sales exceeding both Nokia and RIM.
