Salesforce.com and VMware have entered into a partnership to jointly deliver, sell and support a new enterprise Java cloud called VMforce, which will provide enterprise Java developers an open path to cloud computing.
The companies said that the new offering allows developers to take advantage of the Force.com platform to build Cloud 2 enterprise applications that are social and work on any mobile device in real-time.
According to Salesforce.com, VMforce will support standard Java code, plain old Java objects (POJOs), Java Server Pages (JSPs), Java Servlets through the Spring Framework. By building enterprise Java apps with Spring, companies will be able to port enterprise Java apps onto VMforce or vice versa.
In addition, VMforce can handle scalability automatically and will provide an offering for enterprise Java development in the cloud, including the global infrastructure, virtualisation platform, orchestration and management technology, relational cloud database, development platform and collaboration services, application run time, development framework and tooling.
Delivered by Salesforce.com and VMware, VMforce combines the Java language, the Java framework Spring, and the virtualisation platform VMware vSphere, and runs on the cloud platform Force.com.
VMforce applications will run on the tc Server runtime, an enterprise version of Apache Tomcat. The Force.com platform will provide developers access to pre-built business services that can be configured into their apps without requiring any custom coding.
VMforce includes a VMware vCloud technology that automatically manages the software stack and will on ramp the Java application onto the cloud, automate the wiring of the application to the Force.com database, and manage the underlying vSphere virtualisation platform, the company said.
