Information security systems supplier SafeNet Inc has added a data recovery feature to its hard disk encryption line that is claimed will pull back data lost on a corrupted drive in less than five minutes.

ProtectDrive RapidRecovery can be managed using Microsoft Active Directory, and comes with a Software Development Kit so that it can be knitted into the use of other help desk recovery tools.

ProtectDrive uses pre-boot authentication but also encrypts and decrypts all information ‘on the fly’ to provide full hard disk encryption for laptops, workstations, and servers to protect sensitive information in the event of device theft, loss or disposal.

The system meets the FIPS 140-2 Level 2 security validation standards, the company said.

ProtectDrive is part of Safenet’s Enterprise Data Protection suite which also includes systems that protect file servers, databases, applications, and networks.

In a separate announcement, Aladdin Knowledge Systems confirmed today that it had been acquired by Safenet’s parent company of Vector Capital in a $160 million buyout, and would now be working to “Leverage the company’s strong products and take advantage of the combination with SafeNet’s business.”
