RIM secures Visa approval for its mobile payment app

Allows mobile payments through smartphones or tablets

By CBR Staff Writer

Research In Motion’s (RIM) said its Secure Element Manager (SEM) application for NFC (Near Field Communication) mobile payments has been approved by Visa.

RIM’s Secure Element Manager (SEM) is a backend application for carriers that can securely manage credentials on SIM cards installed in all types of NFC-enabled mobile devices. SEM offers software and server infrastructure in the cloud which is completely managed by RIM.

RIM NFC Services and TSM Product Management senior director Frank Maduri said that the approval from Visa of RIM’s SEM solution enables carriers to support Visa issuing banks and financial institutions.

"We now offer carriers a robust solution with around-the-clock global support that works on any NFC-capable device, and meets the stringent technology and usability guidelines for Visa," Maduri said.

The SEM technology has been developed by deploying mobile payments in Canada through SEM by EnStream, which is a joint venture of wireless carriers including Bell, Rogers and Telus.
