Israel has been a target for hackers who oppose the Jewish state and its policy with regards to the Palestinians.

El Al Airlines said in a statement that it was taking necessary precautions and added that flight operations were not disrupted.

Tel Aviv Stock Exchange spokeswoman Oma Goren said it was ‘overwhelmed’ by requests which slowed it down, but did not shut it out.

There has been an attack by hackers on the access routes to the website, said Goren.

However, there have been no confirmed reports of top Israeli government sites being hacked.

The news of the hacking prompted patriotic response from the Israel Radio, with its linguist insisting the use of ‘patzchan’ – someone who breaks open – instead of the English word hacker in its Hebrew broadcasts.

Earlier this month, a Saudi hacker initiated the confrontation by revealing details of about 15,000 Israeli credit cards online, to which Israeli intelligence unit soldier retaliated more recently.
