The enterprise software firm Red Hat will pivot towards the cloud in the wake of several recent acquisitions and continued revenue growth this year.
Jim Whitehurst, chief executive of Red Hat, said: "Right now, we’re in the midst of a major shift from client server to cloud mobile. It’s a once every twenty years kind of change.
"We’re staring at a huge opportunity – the chance to become the leader in enterprise cloud, much like we are the leader in enterprise open source."
His remarks come after Red Hat and the networking firm Cisco announced a new service for the deployment of the cloud software platform OpenStack.
The firm recently confirmed it would purchase FeedHenry, creators of a mobile app development platform, following the purchase of cloud firm eNovance and storage firm Inktank earlier this year.
Whitehurst described the shift as a "chance to establish open source as the default choice of this next era" of enterprise software, with the firm still committed to the open source operating system Linux that helped it to make its name.
"We want to show customers that open is better," he added. "We are bringing customers the tools they need to build their infrastructure from the ground up with open source, enabling amazing flexibility and choice."
