Recommind and Open Text unite for legal hold platform

Data lockdown to help companies in litigation-heavy times

By Steve Evans

Enterprise search vendor Recommind has announced a strategic partnership with enterprise content management (ECM) provider Open Text to create an end-to-end legal hold platform.

Open Text’s ECM suit will be integrated with Recommind’s Insite Legal Hold to enable companies to automatically identify, explore, collect and preserve data if legal proceedings are initiated. The product will be called Open Text eDiscovery Early Case Assessment powered by Recommind.

Recommind’s Insite Legal Hold uses Explore in Place technology to locate and analyse information before moving it to a repository where it can be held in response to an investigation or lawsuit.

The software uses Recommind’s conceptual search and auto-categorisation technology to automatically organising all information by more than 20 key parameters such as concept group, file type, language and key phrase, supporting instant analysis of data prior to a hold being executed.

Once a legal hold is created Insite Legal Hold automatically identifies and collects any newly created information relevant to that particular case. This aims to speed up the process of collecting information relevant to any given investigation or legal proceeding.

Craig Carpenter, VP, marketing & business development at Recommind, told CBR that he feels the software is particularly relevant during these turbulent economic times. “When times are good, people don’t sue each other very much; they’re making money and they have money. When times are bad, people tend to sue a lot more.”

“EDiscovery and eDisclosure are becoming core platforms for businesses. I think we’ll start to see more and more of this soft of software over the next few years. It’s the beginning of the journey, not the end.”

Carpenter said that the size and customer base of the two companies was one of the main reasons they joined forces. “Neither is biggest in its space but we’re a good fit. We’d be lost if we were integrated with a Microsoft-sized company. Open Text has a sizable user base of large enterprises and we’ve never had full product lines in these businesses.”

He added that Open Text’s user base should enable Recommind to significantly increase its customer base.
