Pro-Palestinian hacktivists attack AVG, Avira, WhatsApp

Anonymous-affiliated hackers also claimed liability for hacking Twitter.

By CBR Staff Writer

The websites of popular mobile messaging service WhatsApp, security software providers including AVG, Avira have been attacked by the Pro-Palestinian hackers and been redirected to defaced pages.

Dubbed KDMS, the Anonymous-affiliated hackers also claimed responsibility for hacking Twitter, sending pro-Palestinian defacement messages concluding as ‘long live Palestine.’

Reports reveal that all the three websites appear to be the victim of an attack on Network Solutions, which is a domain name registrar and website hosting firm.

Avira security expert Sorin Mustaca said that the firm’s account used to manage the DNS records registered at Network Solutions has received a fake password-reset request not being initiated by anyone at Avira.

"Network Solutions appears to have honoured this request and allowed a third party to assume control of our DNS," Mustaca said.

The hacktivists also claimed responsibility for an attack on hosting firm Leaseweb by successfully affecting a DNS redirect for its homepage.

Several other sites are also the victims of DNS redirection hacks including attacks on The New York Times, Twitter by Syrian Electronic Army, while a Turkish hacker group attacked the websites including the Daily Telegraph, the Register and UPS.
