Some phone makers are exploring alternatives to the Android operating system in the wake of Apple’s recent patent victory over Samsung.

Recently, a US court ruled that Samsung’s Android mobile devices infringe Apple patents which which could lead to sales ban and high licensing fees for th mobile software platform.

The ruling could impact many smaller vendors that use Android including HTC, ZTE, and Sony.

The California jury said Samsung infringed six of seven Apple patents in the case and after the verdict, Google said that most of the patents involved don’t relate to the core Android operating system.

Apple has also filed a new patent lawsuit at the US District Court, Northern District of California against Samsung Electronics, requesting to add four more Samsung devices to patent-infringing product list in an amended patent infringement complaint.

Android was used in 68% of all smartphones sold last quarter, with Samsung making almost half of them, while Microsoft had 3% market share.

Sony launched three Android phones this week while Chinese phone maker Huawei launched four phones.

Recently, Microsoft launched the android version of its cloud service, the SkyDrive app, for the Android powered smartphones, which can be downloaded through Google Play Store.

Samsung, which has used a number of platforms, revealed a series of Windows 8/RT tablets alongside its Android portfolio.
