Paul Maritz out as VMware CEO?

Reports suggest successful boss is gone - but is he heading for EMC's top job?

By Steve Evans

VMware CEO Paul Maritz is leaving the virtualisation company and will be replaced by EMC’s Pat Gelsinger, according to reports.

Reports first emerged on CRN, who cited multiple unnamed sources familiar with the situation.

It is not clear at this stage whether Maritz is moving to another role within VMware or its parent company EMC or whether he is leaving completely.

Maritz has long been linked with the CEO role at EMC if and when the incumbent boss Joe Tucci eventually stands down. It was expected he would retire in 2012 but that date has recently been pushed back to 2013, according to reports. It could be that this move is to clear the way for Maritz to replace Tucci next year.

Alternatively some reports have suggested that Maritz will move over to the CEO role at Cloud Foundry, the open source Platform as a Service (PaaS) offering started by VMware.

During his four years as VMware CEO the company has seen record growth, with revenue climbing from $1.88bn in 2008 to $3.77bn in 2011. He has also overseen a push away from the company’s virtualisation stronghold to the post-PC era, with VMware aiming to be the driving force behind the management of cloud-based apps that run on multiple devices such as iPads and smartphones.

VMware had not responded to CBR’s request for comment at the time of publication.
