Orange has unveiled new open source mobile widget platform, which enables Web-based mobile apps to be developed for all types of mobile devices.

The company said that the new open source mobile widget platform includes a widget reader, which is integrated into Orange mobiles throughout the world server technology and enables management of a catalogue of widgets tools for creating widgets, documentation and examples of code.

The new mobile widget platform allows developers and content publishers to engage with more mobile customers and help put the mobile Internet within everyone’s reach.

In addition, the widget is designed to reach the all possible range of mobiles and allows smartphone and feature phone users to have Internet services in a graphic, simple and connected form.

Orange digital innovation and communities vice president Patrice Slupowski said that the company’s ambition is to help all its customers get access to the mobile Internet.

"By taking this open approach, we are sharing our know-how in getting mobile widgets onto commonly used, low-end mobile phones, just as Netvibes did with its Universal Widget API technology," Slupowski said.

The company said that the new open source mobile widget platform will be available for all telephone manufacturers, integrators, developers and operators.
