Oracle unveils VM Server for Sparc 2.0

Includes resource management, power management and availability enhancements

By CBR Staff Writer

Oracle has announced VM Server for Sparc 2.0, a server virtualisation offering that allows up to 128 virtual servers on one system by taking advantage of the Sparc T-Series servers.

VM Server for Sparc 2.0 includes performance, resource management, flexibility, power management and availability enhancements.

It can support sophisticated enterprise workloads, including Real Application Clusters environments.

Oracle said that VM Server for Sparc makes it possible to run multiple separate OS environments, including both Solaris 10 and Solaris 11 Express, on Sparc T-Series servers allowing consolidation of separate kernel environments with sharing and dynamic reallocation of CPU, network, storage and other resources.

The Sparc 2.0 features a low-overhead architecture that provides scalable performance under increasing workloads.

Its dynamic memory reconfiguration allows memory to be added or removed on an active domain.

CPU clock speed adjustments, memory power management and power limit settings help ensure that energy consumption is optimised with utilisation.

The company said that its Solaris has been optimised for guest domain migration with VM Server for Sparc, enabling flexible migration of an active domain.

VM Server for Sparc 2.0 also features wire speed encryption capabilities and improved virtual disk multipathing that help ensure virtual disk failover capabilities to handle I/O domain, storage and storage-path failures.

Oracle Linux and Virtualization Engineering senior vice president Wim Coekaerts said that with advanced performance, management and availability features, VM Server for Sparc 2.0 delivers unrivalled enterprise-class virtualisation capabilities.
