Oracle has released the latest version of its Oracle Application Express, with enhanced functionality and additional data upload capabilities.

Oracle Application Express (Oracle APEX) is a rapid Web application development tool for the Oracle database.

Release 4.1 of Oracle Application Express has been designed to improve the development of database-centric Web 2.0 applications and reports, Oracle said.

The comapny said that the latest version of Application Express is a "no-cost" option included with all editions and releases of Oracle Database 11g.

Using only a Web browser, developers can rapidly build and deploy professional and scalable applications for Oracle Databases that are both fast and secure with Oracle Application Express, said the company.

The company says on its website that many organisations struggle with the proliferation of spreadsheets and desktop database applications, such as MS Access. To tackle this departments often develop applications independent of their IT organisation, without sufficient safe guards in respect to security, backup and recovery, and data integrity.

The company says, "Additionally, numerous organizations that developed applications in Oracle Forms are now looking to modernize their legacy applications. Application Express is very adept at converting these applications into modern, Web 2.0 applications that are secure, scalable and reliable."

Among the new features of Oracle Application Express 4.1 are: Improved error handling, mobile applications, tabular forms, extension of dynamic actions to include support for client side processing of buttons, expansion of plug-ins to incorporate authentication and authorization types, and redesigned websheets.
