Oracle has acquired Ksplice, the technology provider for updating Linux, for an undisclosed sum.
Oracle said the acquisition will increase the security, reliability and availability of Oracle Linux by enabling users to apply security updates, diagnostics patches and critical bug fixes without rebooting the product.
Oracle notes that the zero downtime capabilities provided by Ksplice will help make the Ksplice technology a standard feature in its Linux Premier Support offering.
Ksplice’s technology will be able to take Oracle’s kernel updates and transform them into zero downtime updates, with no reboot necessary, resulting in improved system availability and security as well as reduced operational costs for the customer, Ksplice said.
Linux administrators will be able to avoid the costly and disruptive system reboots that often occur with monthly Linux kernel security updates.
Ksplice, founded in 2008, is based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, US and has 700 customers in various industries.
