Opera Software has unveiled the final version of Opera Mobile 10.1 for Symbian/Series 60 phones that the company says has faster JavaScript performance for a speedy browsing experience.

Opera Mobile 10.1 for Symbian is a compilation (JIT) performance optimisation to the Carakan JavaScript engine, the same engine that drives Opera’s desktop browser, the company said.

The new version performs nine times faster than Opera Mobile 10.0 on the SunSpider JavaScript test, according to speed trials done by the company.

The new browser provides geolocation support, which enables Web services such as maps and travel applications to recognise one’s location to provide the person with customised, relevant content.

Opera Software CEO Lars Boilesen said Opera Mobile 10.1 today brings the best mobile browsing experience to the world’s most popular smartphone platform.

Opera Mobile 10.1 features include Speed Dial, tabbed browsing, Opera Link and password manager; Opera Turbo compression for shrinking webpages to as little as 20% of their original size; and kinetic scrolling, a virtual keyboard and auto-rotation to landscape.

Opera Mobile 10.1 is available for smartphones based on Symbian^3, and Symbian S60 3rd and 5th editions.
