Video game service OnLive has decided to extend its service to tablets and mobile devices.

The company will now stream console-quality games on tablets and phones using a mobile application. Its technology allows its servers to communicate with players’ gadgets in real time.

The consumers can buy or rent games from the service or alternately pay a monthly fee to play older and not very popular games for no extra charge.

OnLive founder and CEO Steve Perlman said the release of the new apps marked a major milestone.

OnLive apps being offered for free have been customised for and tested on the iPad, the Kindle Fire and several Android tablets, Perlman said. The company also plans to release apps for the iPhone and Android smartphones "soon."

Mobile users will be able to play games over Wi-Fi and over 4G data connections. Users could play games over 3G connections too, but OnLive is discouraging that because delays would make for a poor experience, Perlman added.
