One quarter of SMBs ‘don’t have a mobile strategy’

But they rate mobility as important as electricity for their business.

By Joe Curtis

More than a quarter of British SMBs do not have a mobile strategy, according to a survey.

The study of 200 IT decision makers also found that 30% of middle-sized firms have no contingency for a loss of internet access.

This is despite mobile technologies like cloud computing and mobile devices now being seen by 92% of respondents as nearly as important a business function as gas, electricity and water.

Darren Antill, CEO of managed services provider Intrinsic, which commissioned the research, said: "The bottom line is that a mobile strategy is now business-critical for almost all mid-sized UK organisations.

"To remain competitive, these businesses need to implement a strategic programme that enables or increases the ability for employees to work flexibly, securely, more collaboratively and more productively through the use of technology."

A need to become more agile is the biggest driver of increased adoption of mobile technologies among SMBs, reported by 47% of those surveyed.

An overwhelming nine out of 10 respondents expected their businesses’ investment in mobile technologies to rise by up to 30% between now and 2016, while 57% said their firm is introducing a remote working policy to support enterprise mobility.
