OMsignal’s biometric T-shirts can track your health and fitness in real time

'Smart' clothing relays biometric data on the user through Bluetooth.

By CBR Staff Writer

A Canadian company has launched a collection of biometric ‘smart’ T-shirts which can track wearer’s fitness, physical activity and performance.

OM Biometric Smartwear, from OM Signal has sensors woven into the fabric which can gather biometric data in real-time and then transmit this to the personal dashboard of the OMsignal app.

Multiple touch points in the biometric shirt can monitor heart rate, breathing rate, breathing volume (including wearer’s movement) and calories burned.

OMsignal CEO and co-founder Stéphane Marceau said clothing has always been about protection and fashion, but it will now also help motivate us to better ourselves every day.

"You would never drive a car without a speedometer, RPM or a fuel gauge, right? Well, with OM, you now get a dashboard to better steer your life, to increase your self-mastery, to push your fitness performance, and live a healthier lifestyle," Marceau added.

The T-shirts come with little black box which clipped into the garment to relay the biometric data to the OMsignal iOS app through Bluetooth.

The app then gives the wearer realtime feedback, with regular health summaries able to track a user’s progress.

OMsignal T-shirts can also provide sports-specific data including heart rate zone tracking and heart rate recovery, as well as wellness insights such as breathing balance, personal fuel and RPM.

The biometric shirts are claimed to have odour-resistant and ‘moisture wicking’ features, as well as slimming and posture support benefits.

The T-shirts will available in different sizes and colour combinations including black, grey with orange and indigo, and OMsignal will start shipping the garments in the summer of 2014.
