Oculus founder Palmer Luckey has hand delivered the first Rift VR (Virtual Reality) headset to a customer. The winner of the headset is one Ross Martin from Alaska who pre-ordered the headset back in January.
Palmer Luckey said he wanted the satisfaction of giving the first Rift headset after being involved in the development of the headset since 2009.
He said: "I’ll be damned if some random delivery guy is going to get the satisfaction of delivering the first Rift. That’s mine."
Deliveries of Oculus Rift VR headsets began on 28th of March, to those who have already pre-booked them in January.
The winner Ross Martin was himself not aware that he was the first person to be delivered the Rift headset, and that the delivery would be made by Luckey.
Martin said that he got a mail from Oculus saying his headset would be delivered on Saturday and he assumed that it was an automated mail that everyone received.
According to Oculus, more than 100 customers ordered the headset at the same exact second and Ross Martin was the one who became the first customer by a fraction of a second.
The Oculus Rift headset happens to be the first dedicated VR headset to reach consumers. HTC’s Vive VR headset will reach consumers in April.
The price for the VR headset in the US is $599 (£423).The headset has an OLED display with 2160 × 1,200 resolution and a 110 degree of field view.
In order to connect to a PC, the headset requires some minimum specifications which include CPU requirements of Intel i5- 4590 or or greater, graphics card powered by NVIDIA GTX 970/ AMD R9 290 or higher, memory of 8GB and video output of compatible HDMI 1.3 video output.
The Facebook owned company has released Oculus Video for Rift with thousands of Facebook 360 videos along with Vimeo and Twitch livestreams.
It is planning to add feature-length movies, new partners to its Oculus Video.
