Nokia to acquire assets of start-up Cellity

To strengthen its competencies in the area of social networking

By CBR Staff Writer

Nokia said that it has agreed to acquire certain assets of Cellity, a privately owned mobile software startup based in Hamburg, Germany.

Cellity offers services for aggregating address book data and connects all popular communication channels. Its Address book 2.0 tool enables all contact data to be imported from a variety of sources including cellphone address books, Outlook, Twitter, and other social networks to one place.

Nokia said that it will acquire the Cellity team to strengthen its competencies in the area of social networking. It said that Cellity’s current service will not transfer to Nokia and the service will be discontinued.

Christof Hellmis, vice president of services at Nokia, said: cellity has a very talented and innovative team, which we are very happy to have on board at Nokia. With this acquisition, we can accelerate our service development in some of our core areas.”

Nils Weitemeyer, CEO of cellity, said: We are excited that Nokia has chosen our team and technology. With our experience from building social networking solutions, we can help Nokia further develop their services offering.”

However, the agreement is subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to close in the third quarter of 2009.
