Nokia releases 5800 Navigation Edition in US

Comes with device lifetime voice-guided navigation

By CBR Staff Writer

Nokia has released the 5800 Navigation Edition in the US, an upgraded version of the touchscreen device that comes with device lifetime voice-guided navigation for North America and a car kit so it can be mounted on a dash or windshield.

The Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition is equipped with HSDPA internet connection and stereo speakers with surround sound, with playback time of up to 35 hours. In addition, it features 3.2 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, and memory expandable up to 16GB.

The 5800 Navigation Edition features Ovi Maps for mobile, the mobile device service offering navigation for cars and pedestrians. When driving, Ovi Maps for mobile is a car navigation service with safety features like speed limit warnings and speed camera alerts, and near real-time information on traffic congestion due to roadwork or accidents. When walking, the service provides routes that take a pedestrian up one-way streets and through parks, pathways and other shortcuts.

Nokia claims that unlike navigation offerings by other mobile device makers, which require constant mobile data connectivity to provide turn-by-turn guidance, it puts maps and the ability to search addresses and calculate routes directly on the device. This means users do not lose navigation capability when they travel to remote locations where cellular coverage may be unavailable, and also allows users to avoid significant mobile data charges.

The 5800 Navigation Edition comes pre-loaded with maps for the entire US and Canada, and users may also update and add maps from more than 180 additional countries at any time for free using Nokia Map Loader, a downloadable PC application.

The new device can automatically synchronise with Ovi Maps on the web which allows users to search for addresses and points of interest, explore a location, plan routes in advance for walking or driving and then save them.
