Navigon, a Germany-based manufacturer of navigation systems, has unveiled a North American version of its MobileNavigator Lite application for the iPhone.

According to Navigon, the new Lite version includes the same range of functions that of its navigation offering, although no active route guidance with GPS support is available. The new Lite version displays the user’s position on a map and allows to search for nearby POIs.

The company claims that its new Lite version converts any iPhone 3G equipped with the new Apple OS 3.0 operating system and any iPhone 3GS into an ‘equipped’ navigation device. The new Lite version includes features such as Reality View Pro, Lane Assistant Pro, Speed Assistant and Day & Night Mode. It also runs on iPod Touch devices with the OS 3.0.

The company has also implemented typical iPhone functions into the new application, such as an automatic switch between portrait and landscape view.

Egon Minar, CEO of Navigon, said: “Navigon’s new MobileNavigator will offer iPhone users an easy to use navigation solution with many of Navigon’s hallmark features. With the launch of the free Lite version, we wanted to give users the opportunity to experience our new software before buying it.”
