Nationwide has joined hands with Visa Europe to launch a new digital wallet called V.me in the UK.

The company is looking to make online shoppping easier for consumers by removing the need to share card details with retailers.

V.me, created by Visa, allows customers to upload their details into a single digital wallet, which can be used to make future purchases without entering the same card details every time they make purchases.

The company said card details will not be passed on to individual merchants, resulting in faster transactions and improved payment services.

Nationwide chief executive Graham Beale said: "In 1997, Nationwide were first to offer the UK consumer internet banking and we are always looking to invest in ways to improve the customer experience by pioneering new technology.

"In 2008 Nationwide took the decision to invest £1bn in the future of the organisation by implementing a large scale systems modernisation programme."

Visa Europe chief commercial officer Steve Perry added:"The wallet can already be used at over 1,400 online merchants, including household names like Curry’s and Clarks.

"By Christmas there will be more than 4,000 places where you can use V.me by Visa in the UK, and more across Europe."
