Mozilla CEO slams Windows 10 browser choice

Microsoft is being accused of discouraging users from changing default apps in Windows 10.

By CBR Staff Writer

Mozilla CEO Chris Beard is urging Microsoft to reconsider its Windows 10 user settings, alleging that it is forcing the new Edge browser on users, without giving them a choice.

In an open letter to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Beard asked the company to respect user choice.

Beard said: "We appreciate that it’s still technically possible to preserve people’s previous settings and defaults, but the design of the whole upgrade experience and the default settings APIs have been changed to make this less obvious and more difficult.

"It now takes more than twice the number of mouse clicks, scrolling through content and some technical sophistication for people to reassert the choices they had previously made in earlier versions of Windows. It’s confusing, hard to navigate and easy to get lost."

He said Mozilla contacted Microsoft to discuss the issue but the outreach didn’t result in any meaningful progress, resulting in his decision to publish the open letter.

Last week, Microsoft started rolling out the Windows 10 operating system for free, in systems running on Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 PC or tablet.

The new OS features several updates including introduction of the company’s voice assistance system Cortana, new Microsoft Edge browser, and a Xbox app which will deliver the Xbox experience to Windows 10.

Beard argued that the Windows 10 upgrade experience overrides existing user preferences for the Web browser and other apps. He urged Microsoft to give users the choice and control they deserve in Windows 10.
