MobileIron, a mobile device management and security firm, has launched a virtual smartphone platform (VSP) MobileIron 4.0.

MobileIron 4.0 features MobileIron’s App Management and Security, which enables enterprise IT groups to centralise the discovery, deployment and security of internally and externally developed apps for all iOS, Android, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, and Symbian devices in the company.

MobileIron delivers an Enterprise App Storefront combined with a customisable API and policy engine, which ensures secure apps get to employees and rogue apps are kept out, for both corporate-owned and employee-owned smartphones.

MobileIron 4.0 provides new functionalities to meet the growing demand of enterprise app development due to the introduction of iOS4 and its enterprise APIs, and the rapid adoption of iPhone, iPad, and Android devices.

The three functionality areas include expanded enterprise app storefront for iPhone and iPad apps, security and rogue app protection for deciding which apps to allow in and which apps to keep out, and the MobileIron Mobility API for enabling the delivery of cross-platform application information.

MobileIron CEO Bob Tinker said development is decentralised and, many times, IT isn’t even aware of what is being built.

"In order to navigate this enterprise app storm, their users want to harness mobile innovation and, with this release, they are giving them the complete platform to do so with comfort," Tinker said.
