Apple and Google will drive demand for wearable technology, adds report.

By CBR Staff Writer

Wireless accessories shipments are expected to reach 170m units by the end of 2018, according to a report from Juniper Research.

According to the report, wireless accessories shipments will also grow by 18m this year.

The market is expected to be dominated by consumer electronics and fitness accessories in five years time, while healthcare smart wireless accessories are expected to see maximum growth in the longer run.

The report revealed that growth is expected in a wider spectrum of applications, including devices like video eyewear, baby monitoring, home security and TV transmission equipment.

Juniper Research report author Nitin Bhas said that the take up of CE smart wireless accessories will depend on whether companies succeed in creating accessories that will capture the imagination of the consumer.

"Nevertheless, the multiplicity of potential use cases means that the consumer electronics category represents one of the most important areas in which smart wireless accessories will develop," Bhas added.

The app-enabled smart wearables market is said to have already seen a large number of deployments, particularly in the health and fitness area, which is expected to see growth in adoption of smart watches and smart glasses, the report added.
