Mobile shoppers to increase by 50% in two years: report

Mobile shoppers expected to reach 580 million by the end of 2014.

By Tineka Smith

According to Juniper research, the increase of user numbers is due to greater confidence in mobile device browsing and payments.

Mobile shoppers are expected to reach 580 million in 2014, up from 393 million this year.

Retailers reported a market rise in mobile when it came to online transactions.

The report also found that the average size and scale of purchases will continue to rise, while being pushed as users start using mobile for regular transactions like the weekly shop.

eRetail is currently moving to tablets and smartphones with average tablet transactions already exceeding online shopping on desktops and laptops.

The research suggested, however, that many businesses are not optimised for mobile browsing and purchasing, which could constrain growth.

"Consumers increasingly expect to be able to buy their products and services via their smartphones and tablets," said Dr. Windsor Holden, researcher of the report. Companies which do not offer this option face falling behind their competitors."

Juniper research also found that remote digital and physical items purchased online will reach $730bn in five years.

The report highlighted that online transaction security was still a concern amongst users but that users were not applying security solutions for their mobile handset.
