Mobile operators to receive $4bn of revenue a year by 2018

Big data tools expected to improve consumer loyalty.

By Amy-Jo Crowley

Mobile Operators are expected to gain $4bn (£2.4bn) of revenue a year by 2018, driven by use of big data analytic tools, new research has revealed.

This is because information on mobile subscribers combined with big data techniques will help operators anticipate the number leaving them for another one per year, a report by Juniper Research found.

The report, which analysed ‘big opportunities’ with big data, found that leading mobile operators, which implemented big data analytic platforms, had seen a reduction in the number of consumers leaving their network.

MTN South Africa saw churn levels decline 20% per year after deploying a big data programme, which combined subscriber information and social network analysis.

Keith Breed, author of the report, said: "Although the scope for churn reduction varies by country and by operator MNOs with high numbers of Pre Pay subscribers are likely to realise the greatest benefits.

"By gaining control of structured and unstructured customer data for the first time, operators in emerging markets can gain far greater consumer insight than was previously the case."

The report also found that analytics will generate almost $9bn of savings and incremental revenues worldwide for mobile operators by 2018.
