Mobile devices outpace PCs on Thanksgiving

Smartphones and tablets contributed to 52.1% of all online traffic.

By CBR Staff Writer

Mobile devices have surpassed their traditional PC counterparts for online browsing during the Thanksgiving Day, a new IBM report noted.

The majority of consumers used their mobile devices for shopping during the Thanksgiving Day, which even surpassed the online traffic from traditional PCs for the first time.

IBM Smarter Commerce director Jay Henderson said: "Mobile has become the new Thanksgiving tradition as consumers find the best deals with their fingers as well as their feet."

"We saw retailers harness the power of data to engage shoppers, identifying the unique preferences of their customers while quickly capitalizing on online, mobile or in-store trends as they emerged."

The mobile momentum continued through Black Friday, which reported a rise in both online and mobile shopping as consumers made their purchases via their devices.

Smartphones accounted for 34.7% of overall online traffic during Black Friday, which is double that of tablets which accounted for 14.6% of overall traffic.

During Black Friday, New York City maintained the top spot for online shopping during Black Friday followed by Washington; Atlanta; Los Angeles; and Chicago.
