Mobile apps must value consumers’ data privacy

About half of app users have not downloaded an app over privacy concerns.

The UK Information Commissioner Office (ICO) has urged app developers to ensure they do not misuse consumers’ personal information and be clear about reasons behind accessing app users’ specific personal data.

A survey carried out by ICO revealed that about half of all app consumers have not downloaded an app over privacy concerns.

ICO technology principal policy adviser Simon Rice was cited by the BBC as saying that the app industry is one of the fastest growing in the UK, but the survey shows almost half of people have rejected an app due to privacy concerns.

"It is important that developers tackle this issue by making sure their apps look after personal information correctly," Rice said.

In addition, ICO guidance also seeks developers to comply with the Data Protection Act and properly inform users about the consequences upon installing and using an app.

The agency also urges consumers to be offered enough control over their privacy settings, and the privacy policy layout be modified to comply with mobile devices while offering users with brief but vital information primarily.
