By CBR Staff Writer

The rise in sales of mid-range devices drove the overall smartphone shipments to 230m during the second quarter of 2013, up 50% over the corresponding period in 2012, according to a new report.

Juniper Research’s latest report revealed that Samsung shipped about 72 million smartphones and captured 31% market share in the overall smartphone market during the quarter.

Though the company reported record quarter in terms of device shipments, sales of Samsung’s high-end smartphones such as the Galaxy S4 slowed during the period, the report added.

Apple shipped 31 million smartphones during the period, reporting 20% rise, while its profits plunged for the second successive quarter, while its smartphone share also dropped to 14% from 18% in Q1 2013.

According to Juniper, Apple will soon mark its entry into the smart wearables segment.

However, LG shipped 12 million devices during the period, representing its highest ever smartphones sales quarter, and reported a year on year growth of 114%.

Huawei, ZTE and Lenovo reported respective shipments of over 10 million low and mid end smartphones shipments respectively in China during the quarter.
