Microsoft is reportedly developing its own artificial intelligence technology-based virtual assistants which are claimed to be capable of answering user’s "why" questions.

According to Microsoft Research head Peter Lee the software giant is planning to heavily pour money into artificial technology within the R&D.

Currently in its prototype stages, the artificial intelligence (AI) technology would allow users to opt for male or female avatars as a voice assistant, according to Bloomberg.

Microsoft is planning to introduce this type of AI technology in the planned voice-assistant for Windows Phone, ‘Cortana’.

The service is anticipated to offer information related to weather, notifications, and calendar, as well as alarms and phone calls.

Anticipated to be launched in early 2014, the new ‘Cortana’ app is would dominate Windows Phone’s existing voice command capabilities and allow user interaction with the device through natural voice commands, same as Apple’s Siri and Google’s Google Now.
