Microsoft said that its Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system will hit the retail stores worldwide on October 6th 2009.

The company said that it will deliver new customer experiences through an improved user interface, better browsing capabilities and access to valuable services, including Windows Marketplace for Mobile and My Phone services. Windows Mobile 6.5 is said to have a redesigned internet explorer mobile browser, built-in Adobe Flash Lite support for better rendering and completion of tasks.

Microsoft stated: “With the new version, users can change the look and feel of their phones with designer themes or a personal background and customise their home screen with widgets so the information they need is always easy to find.”

The network operators signing on include AT&T, Bell Mobility, Sprint, TELUS and Verizon Wireless in the US; Orange, Deutsche Telekom and Vodafone Group in Europe; TIM Brazil in Latin America; and NTT DoCoMo, SK Telecom, Telstra and WILLCOM in Asia Pacific.

The handset makers producing the phones powered by Window Mobile 6.5 include, HP, HTC, LG Electronics, Samsung, Toshiba and Sony Ericsson.

Todd Peters, corporate vice president of the mobile communications marketing group at Microsoft, said: “A Windows phone gives people a single phone that works for their whole life, keeping them connected to the people and information they care most about by harnessing the power of the PC, phone and Web.”
