Microsoft, ViewSonic sign patent agreement

Windows Phone maker encourages companies to take advantage of its licensing program established to help companies address Android's IP issues

By CBR Staff Writer

Microsoft and US based tablet computer maker ViewSonic have signed a patent agreement that provides broad coverage under Microsoft’s patent portfolio for ViewSonic’s tablets and mobile phones running the Android or Chrome Platform.

The contents of the agreement have not been disclosed, however, Microsoft said that the parties indicate that Microsoft will receive royalties from ViewSonic under the agreement.

Microsoft Intellectual Property and Licensing corporate vice-president and deputy general counsel Horacio Gutierrez said that the company is pleased that ViewSonic is taking advantage of its industrywide licensing program established to help companies address Android’s IP issues.

"This agreement is an example of how industry leaders can reach commercially reasonable arrangements that address intellectual property," Gutierrez said.

The company said that the patent agreement shows the important role IP plays in ensuring a healthy and vibrant IT ecosystem.

In a similar development Microsoft and Taiwanese PC maker Acer have executed a patent license agreement that includes broad coverage under Microsoft’s patent portfolio for Acer’s tablets and smartphones running the Android platform.

Since Microsoft launched its IP licensing program in December 2003, the company has entered into more than 700 licensing agreements and continues to develop programs that make it possible for customers, partners and competitors to access its IP portfolio, said Microsoft.
