The OS includes new tools and capabilities including support for Visual Studio 2012

By CBR Staff Writer

Microsoft has released the new version of Windows Embedded Compact 2013 operating system (OS) that powers small embedded devices and industrial machinery.

The OS features new tools and capabilities including support for Visual Studio 2012 that is claimed to extend the experience of Windows along with support for x86 and ARM architectures.

According to the company, the devices powered by the new OS, when connected through the cloud, generate data that can be attached and analysed to offer insights for the enterprise.

Windows Embedded Compact 2013 can be used in devices such as programmable logic controllers and human-machine interface panels, RFID scanners as well as portable ultrasound machines and diagnostic lab equipment in healthcare settings.

New features of the Os include improved core operating system with memory management and networking capabilities, file-system performance, optimised startup with snapshot boot, built-in support for Wi-Fi, cellular and Bluetooth technologies and a connection to Windows Azure.

Additionally, the OS features support from developers and partners, who have built add-on applications including HTML5 browsers.
