US-based software maker Microsoft has launched the new Windows 8 operating system (OS) and its new Surface tablet with Windows RT in China.

According to the firm, the new devices will also be launched in the US on 26 October 2012.

Following the launch, the new OS will also be available for download onto PCs operating on Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7.

Microsoft corporate vice president, Microsoft Greater China Region CEO Ralph Haupter, commenting on the launch, said: "Windows 8 ushers in a new era with amazing experiences for Chinese consumers and commercial customers and creates new opportunities for Microsoft partners."

The PC makers including Acer, Asustek, Dell, HP, Samsung and Sony have begun taking pre-orders for systems pre-installed with Windows 8 OS.

The new OS is also claimed to be compatible with tablets that support multitouch.

Featuring larger screen, built-in stand along with keyboard cover, the new Surface tablet are currently available for pre order in the US and will be offered with a price range between $499 and $699.

Running on Windows RT, a version of the Microsoft’s Windows 8 OS, the new tablet, developed for the lower-power ARM processors, comes with Microsoft Office 2013.
