Microsoft displays Windows Phone Mango

Updated mobile operating system is due in autumn; expected to run Nokia phones

By CBR Staff Writer

Microsoft has shown off the Mango operating system, the company’s newest version of Windows Phone mobile OS.

The company said that the software update will offer 500 new features. Chief among them will be the Internet Explorer 9 and integration of SMS, Facebook chat and Windows Live Messenger into the same window.

Microsoft mobile communications president Andy Lees told BBC seven months ago the company started on its mission to make smartphones smarter and easier for people to do more.

"With Mango, Windows Phone take a major step forward in redefining how people communicate and use apps and the internet," he added.

Single inbox for all e-mail accounts and the addition of Twitter and LinkedIn to contact information are other features of the updated Windows phone.

First smartphones running on Windows Phone 7 were released seven months ago, but they failed to rise to the expectations. At present, Microsoft has only 4% of the mobile phone market.

This autumn, Mango-powered phones are likely to face competition from a new iPhone from Apple and other new devices running Google’s Android software.

The Mango OS is expected to power Nokia’s mobile phone, with the first Nokia handsets running Windows Phone expected some time after October.
