British intelligence MI6, along with officials of the GCHQ, have hacked and planted a secret code on al-Qaida’s website, to divert seekers of bomb making information to a website with recipe for cupcakes.

The Daily Telegraph reported that the cyber attack was intended to disrupt efforts by al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsular to recruit "lone-wolf" terrorists with a new English-language magazine, Inspire.

The magazine is produced by the radical preacher Anwar al-Awlaki.

The secret code planted by MI6 confused users with garbled computer code when they attempted to download the 67-page colour magazine.

The magazine features an article about bomb-making under the title: "Make a bomb in the Kitchen of your Mom."

There are reports that the US backed out of the operation after being involved in the beginning.

Recently, armed forces minister Nick Harvey acknowledged that the UK is working on a cyber-weapons programme with offensive capabilities.
