Messaging apps saw usage triple in 2013, found Flurry Analytics, contributing to an overall 115% rise in app use.

The highest growth in usage came in messaging apps like Snapchat and Whatsapp, which were used three times as much as in 2012, while in March, messaging service LINE counted 100 million downloads within three months.

According to Flurry’s report, productivity apps experienced a 150% rise in usage during the year with smartphones and tablets replacing personal computers.

Apps including Evernote and Quip saw increased adoption while gaming apps recorded a 66% year-over-year growth.

The rise in app use was attributed to increase in the number of smartphones and tablets.

The analytics firm expects 2014 to be an important year for these apps and one that could decide if they are going to remain independent or whether their developers decide to turn them into mobile platforms and distribution channels in their own right.
