Meerkat opens up its Developer API

The company said that 37 teams are currently building apps on top of Meerkat.

By CBR Staff Writer

Live streaming app maker Meerkat has launched a developer’s platform and APIs, which will allow third party developers to build tools for a wide range of use cases and allow them to work together with Meerkat development team.

According to Meerkat founder Ben Rubin, the approach is not only going to be beneficial for developers but it will also make it different from rival company Periscope, which has been acquired by Twitter.

With the API developers will be able to get current or scheduled streams and gather information regarding comments and watchers, as presently the app does not allow users to post a stream from outside its platform, reported Tech Crunch.

Meerkat said: "We are committed to working with third party developers and want to highlight products like #Katch (katchkats.com), Meerkat Stats(meerkatstats.com), and Meerkat Streams (meerkatstreams.com).

"These are examples of great products that the Meerkat community loves and that we’ll be doing everything we can to keep supporting.

"This goes out to the 37 teams currently building on top of Meerkat and anyone who joins the Meerkat developer community."

Meerkat allows users to live stream video from their smartphone to their Twitter followers at once, but its popularity has dropped after Periscope was acquired by Twitter.
