Phishing attacks continue to pose a significant security risks for businesses and consumers around the world, with only 7% of global business users able to detect them, a report from security specialists McAfee has found.
In addition to a rise in the overall phishing volume, the report also noticed a major rise in the sophistication of the attacks taking place in the wild.
McAfee EMEA CTO Raj Samani said: "As highlighted by our latest report, phishing continues to pose significant security risks for businesses and consumers alike.
"More worryingly, perhaps, is the lack of education around how to spot a phishing email amidst the many emails we’re sent on a daily basis. But phishing is only a small drop in the wider security threat landscape, which is ever-changing and increasingly complex.
"It’s no longer enough to react to threats as and when they happen."
Worryingly, 79% of the 1,755 British participants surveyed were not able to detect even one of seven phishing emails.
Among all departments, research and development (R&D) was able to detect phishing emails with 77% accuracy, followed by IT at 73%.
New malware samples increased by 1% with over 31 million new samples captured, marking the largest registered in a single quarter.
During the second quarter, the overall mobile malware rose by 17%, while the rate of new malware seems to have stabilised at 700,000 per quarter.
